For years, Dr. Ferdie Pacheco has had vivid dreams of characters and events set against the backdrop of old Ybor City. Right after this dreams, he has sat down with pen and paper to write these stories from his subconscious.

In 1940 we had a few big names as sports. In baseball, Joe DiMaggio had replaced Babe Ruth; in boxing, Joe Louis had replaced Jack Dempsey; and in horse racing Seabiscuit was challenging War Admiral for supremacy.

The following is not a sorry about Seabiscuit, rather it is a story about young lover and how Sea Biscuit impacted on that.

Young Love
In my senior year in high school, I had a very successful run. I was Dean's List, the editor of the school paper, a sort of athlete and a leader of my class. I was very popular.

I worked in my Dad's drug store every evening and had no time for dating. I was more than prepared to start the "dating game," but work came first.

Into my classroom came a young girl of astounding good looks. Since she was alphabetically next to me in line, I was very happy to see such a version of beauty sit next to me. She was prim, pleasant, polite but not friendly. Just correct.

Her name was Gwendolyn, but she pointed out it was easier to call her Gwen since jokes about King Arthur's Court had followed her since grammar school and she'd grown tired of them.

At first, I tried to dazzle her with clever repartee, but her response was to be cleverer than mine. And she was cold about it. She was very witty on a biting sort of way.
