In the first
days of the paper, news would be translated from the Tampa Tribune Morning
edition, then local news added and an assortment of other items would
round it out. It was not unusual to find recipes, poetry, sports, advertisements
and topics of special interest such as a womans column and a wire
service from Spain and Cuba supplementing Manteigas |

La Gaceta was well received by the community. In a very short time Victoriano Manteiga, founder, earned respect for his entrepreneurial and journalistic abilities. His son young son Roland joined the paper as a delivery boy at age 10. As Roland grew so did his responsibilities, his column, As We Heard It, grew |

in popularity and size. He established and developed contacts throughout the city and state. Developing a reputation for honesty and fair play. It was not uncommon to find Roland writing in defense of the Latin community or the underdog in general. Rolands son Patrick joined the paper when he was old enough, just as his father had done many years before. |

To this day the Publishers desk is one of the first that you will
see when you walk through the front door of La Gaceta Publishing. Their
tradition of the open door policy is still as apparent today as it was back in the early 1920s. |
