In the first days of the paper, news would be translated from the Tampa Tribune Morning edition, then local news added and an assortment of other items would round it out. It was not unusual to find recipes, poetry, sports, advertisements and topics of special interest such as a woman’s column and a wire service from Spain and Cuba supplementing Manteiga’s
editorial column.

La Gaceta was well received by the community. In a very short time Victoriano Manteiga, founder, earned respect for his entrepreneurial and journalistic abilities.

His son young son Roland joined the paper as a delivery boy at age 10. As Roland grew so did his responsibilities, his column, ‘As We Heard It’, grew

in popularity and size. He established and developed contacts throughout the city and state. Developing a reputation for honesty and fair play. It was not uncommon to find Roland writing in defense of the Latin community or the underdog in general.

Roland’s son Patrick joined the paper when he was old enough, just as his father had done many years before.

To this day the Publisher’s desk is one of the first that you will see when you walk through the front door of La Gaceta Publishing. Their tradition
of the open door policy is still as apparent today as it was back in
the early 1920’s.
